Her daughter wakes up, her legs covered in bruises. The reason will shock you

She’s just 4-years-old yet she faces a challenge that very few her age have to deal with. It started in 2015 when Bo August got chickenpox. Being a common ailment, her parents, Julia and Dan, didn’t think anything bad of it. Then little Bo had walking difficulty.

She woke up one morning and all of a sudden she had bruises all over her legs. Bruises even showed up on the soles of her feet. They rush little Bo to the hospital. They end up diagnosing her with a rare condition called “purpura fulminans” which is an acute and often fatal thrombotic disorder. It creates these blood spots, as well as bruising and discoloration of the skin. All the result of blood clotting. This can actually lead to death within a few hours.

She goes straight to ICU, and Bo’s mother immediately asks the following:

“I asked the doctor if it was life-threatening, and he replied that it was a threat to life and limbs.”

Losing both legs, or her life, became a very real possibility. Turns out that Bo’s body’s defense when responding to the chickenpox, ended up creating this dangerous complication, where blood flow was blocked.
The little girl was on 12 different meds. She had plasma transfusions and also had three skin grafts she had to undergo.

She was in the hospital for 10 whole weeks. Mostly in a wheelchair as she had to learn how to walk again. Thankfully Bo survived. Thankfully, she didn’t lose her legs.

The experience will not be soon forgotten, and she is required for a whole year to wear compression socks.

Here’s Bo’s mother speaking on raising awareness:

“I want to raise awareness of this disease, because it’s every parent’s nightmare to be told that your child might die or lose body parts because of chickenpox.”

She is now healthy and back to attending day-care as before. She even shows off her scars to friends, which shows that her confidence hasn’t been affected. The parents are still trembling at the close call that occurred though.
